By late August, somehow we can feel the change of seasons on the way. And having your fireplace system clean, well-designed, and running impeccably at the onset of chilly weather means you can enjoy it at the first cool gust of wind – and have peace of mind basking in its warmth all winter long.

So, how can you get your fireplace ready?

Get It Cleaned, Inspected & in Tip-Top Shape

  • Schedule a chimney inspection and sweeping. You need certified, expert eyes on your chimney annually, scanning it for any issues that could impair safety or functionality. Doing this helps prevent bigger problems in the long run, – and doing it before a new burning season is ideal.
  • Maintain it. If your chimney inspection revealed any damage, deteriorating components, or other issues, make a plan to have them addressed.
  • Clean the firebox. Hopefully last year’s ashes are long cleared. If you haven’t done it yet, get them out. Then, take advantage of an empty firebox to scrub out any stains with water and baking soda.
  • Test it out. Before cold weather sets in, have a trial run to make sure your system is running as it should.

Stock Up on Fuel

  • Stock up on seasoned firewood. If you have a wood-burning fireplace, stock up on firewood. Be sure it’s well seasoned so that it burns efficiently and produces less smoke and creosote.
  • Clear out old fuel. Remove any damp or moldy wood in your stock, and ensure that logs are stored in a dry, well-ventilated area, so they’re ready to use.
  • Check gas/propane or pellet/corn supply. For other fuel sources, you may simply want to check your supply or stock up on pellets so you’re ready for that first fall fire.

Put Safety First

  • Invest in functional detectors. You should have smoke and carbon detectors that are in good condition and that meet manufacturer’s recommendations for placement in your home. Test them regularly – and replace the batteries if needed.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher handy. Inspect any home fire extinguishers and ensure they’re well placed for easy access in an emergency. Refresh your knowledge of how to use them by employing the PASS technique.
  • Book a chimney sweeping. Along with inspection, your chimney will likely need to be swept to clear it from obstructions and build up that could otherwise inhibit ventilation or become a chimney fire hazard.
  • Check your fireplace tools. Make sure your pokers, tongs, and brushes are in good condition and at the ready. Replace them if needed, and consider investing in a fireplace screen if you don’t have one to prevent sparks and embers from escaping.

Upgrade or Accessorize Your Fireplace

  • Upgrade your appliance. Want a fresh aesthetic, a fuel conversion, or something totally new? Our sister company, Northeastern Fireplace has a wide range of stunning options sure to impress – and a helpful team to help you entertain the possibilities for your space.
  • Get some accessories. Accessories can change the feel of your fireplace and improve the way you use it. Andirons add elegance and improve air circulation, boosting efficiency. An attractive new ash container takes a necessary item from mere practicality to stylish function. Firebacks are decorative, useful for heat reflection into the room, and protective. You can even consider adding a new fireplace hood, screen, or custom door to elevate your fireplace. And these options are just the beginning!
  • Decorate the surrounding space. Seasonal decor that reflects autumn colors, natural elements, or holiday themes can bring the joys of the season into your living space. Pumpkins and pinecones, LED candles, and fall-themed artwork can all add to the cozy feel of the atmosphere. While adding a warm touch, however, keep in mind that any combustible element should be kept at least three feet from the fireplace itself. So keep those plaid blankets and knit throw pillows to the couch!

Act Now & Reap the Benefits
