The Basics
We all know about oxygen. Growing up it’s one of the first things we learn in science class. We know that it is what enables us to breathe and survive on earth, it’s what every living creature even plants and animals need to thrive and grow. Yet not much is really talked about the used up version of oxygen which is carbon monoxide.
What is Carbon Monoxide exactly?
Carbon monoxide is a gas that isn’t easily detected due to its odorless and colorless characteristics. Nonetheless, it is poisonous and can be deadly when in large amounts. It is the product of the incomplete burning of different sources of fuels. This includes wood, roasting coal, charcoal, kerosene, propane and other natural gases. Machinery needed and encountered almost anywhere runs on such fuels. Such as automobiles, generators, lawn mowers, and other equipment produce CO. Factories and even homes that use fireplaces during the colder seasons emit Carbon Monoxide.
What Carbon Monoxide Does to People
Carbon monoxide is hazardous to one’s health. There have been several reports on how Carbon monoxide sickens people. Ever wonder why sometimes you become nauseous and have dizzy spells? This is usually the effect of having been exposed to more Carbon monoxide than oxygen. This is nothing new to those exposed in the busy cities they live or work in.
What Can Be Done?
We are often encouraged by many environmentalists to plant more trees, carpool with friends or colleagues, or walk and use the public transportation then owning private vehicles, to help minimize the production of CO. Yet one commonly overlooked way to ensure the health of ourselves and our loved ones would be to make sure that our houses are clean. One way to ensuring the cleanliness and safety of our homes would be to check on the condition of all of our fuel using machinery and having annual maintenance of our fireplaces.
It may not seem like much but it does take our efforts to clean the air one step further. It would be best to act on this as early as possible.
