We Specialize In The Restoration & Renovation Of Historical Fireplaces!

One of the things we love most about our business is that we get to see some of the most beautiful historical fireplaces in our area. We love the stunning craftsmanship and attention to detail, and how well they attest to the longevity of high-quality materials and design. But as charming as they are, traditional fireplaces are often not up to current safety and efficiency standards, and need to be updated for continued enjoyment. That’s where we come in!

The skilled and knowledgeable technicians at Northeastern Masonry & Chimney have the tools and experience to properly and professionally update historical fireplaces without causing damage to the classic exterior. We have a comprehensive understanding of how these fireplaces and chimney systems were built and how to safely update them without sacrificing their historical charm.

Why Would My Historical Fireplace & Chimney System Need To Be Updated?

If your system was built before 1922, chances are it does not have a chimney liner. This is not only incredibly inefficient and hazardous to the chimney itself — it can also increase your risk of carbon monoxide poisoning or fire.

Although most modern unlined chimneys are retrofitted with stainless steel liners, historical chimneys and fireplaces typically have an odd-shaped or odd-sized flue in which stainless steel liners simply won’t work. In these cases, we typically use Thermocrete, which is a ceramic sealant designed to strengthen the interior of the chimney and stand up to corrosion and heat. It helps to provide a smooth surface that encourages air flow, while keeping dangerous gases from escaping through small cracks and gaps in the masonry. We love Thermocrete because it can be applied safely, without damage to the fireplace, and won’t significantly alter the size of the flue. This is especially important because if the flue size is reduced, the entire system will experience problems with efficiency and draft.
